The above is the notification I get when trying to install any version of SPTD. The installer states there is no version of SPTD currently installed.
Previous user of this computer manually tried uninstalling SPTD and says he deleted from the registry whatever he could that related to SPTD. I see there is still an SPTD key in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\ Services\sptd," but there may be missing files beyond that (i.e. I don't see a place to edit "DWORD Start value").
Any help would be most appreciated.

If there is no SPTD version installed/running atm, delete the whole SPTD key in Services hive. Then run installer again. Note that this requires to re-install all software using SPTD layer (e.g. Alcohol, Daemon Tools).

Hi,
I have the same problem. In the registry there is sptd key but i cannot delete it or modify it... it is really getting annoying...
the problem:
Daemon or Alcohol tools dont want to install, it says: "unable to create service, error code 5." and when trying to modify the key in registry: "error reading the value's contents.

You can not delete SPTD key while SPTD layer is running, change Start value to 4 (i.e. disabled), and reboot. After reboot you should be able to delete SPTD key, enable all permissions of cfg key first.
Note that this requires to re-install all software using SPTD layer (e.g. Alcohol, Daemon Tools), so it's recommended you remove these softwares first.

My problem is that I cannot modify anything in sptd key folder, as I said when trying to modify the key it says: "error reading the value's contents". Is there any way to renew ( return to the previus state the key was ) SPTD key folder?

Download SPTD standalone installer, execute it and select "Uninstall", then reboot and try again to delete entire SPTD key (change cfg permissions first).
Also check permissions of SPTD key, and entire Services hive. Seems you screwed some permissions up.

Boot recovery console with your Windows cd, select your Windows installation, enter Administrator password, then execute "disable sptd", enter "exit" to reboot. This should disable SPTD service in registry, then delete SPTD key in services hive.

You must enable all permissions on cfg key first prior to deletion of entire sptd key.
