I had never heard of "SCSI Pass through Direct" until I tried to upgrade Vista 64 bit to Windows 7 on a Dell laptop and was told by Microsoft Windows 7 that it had to be removed.
I can't find it anywhere on my system. I don't use the products mentioned in the website like Alcohol, Daemon etc. Dell said they didn't put it there. found a file to download on your forum that claims to remove and reinstalll it. I've tried to download it on 2 different systems with the message "SPTDinst-v162-x64 is not a valid Win32 application."
Can anyone tell me how to get it off, what it might be for, why I need it, how I may have gotten it?.

thanks in advance

You can just open the registry editor (execute regedit), then go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\sptd
and change the "Start" value to 4, and reboot.
SPTD service is disabled, so you should be able upgrade OS without any problems.
Note that current SPTD layer version is 1.69.
