Both Daemon Tools and Alcohol worked fine until this afternoon when I upgraded from Vista Business to Vista Ultimate. Now NO version of SPTD will install correctly, tried every version from 1.42 up to the latest 1.45 - same story - click "Install", reboot - Run the installer again
and it claims that SPTD is not installed. Repeat until blue in face. "Something" in the Ultimate (HA!) edition of Vista is preventing this from working, and I for one would really like to get it fixed.
Have disabled antivirus, turned off UAC and just about every other thing I could think of. someone else hinted that it might be to do with rights in the HKLM/Currentcontrolset/services(sp?), but that hive does not exist on my Vista.
Any fix for this problem would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have the same problem. After upgrading from Vista Business to Vista Ultimate Daemon Tools will not run because it cannot find SPTD. Attempting to re-install Daemon Tools appears to go okay, but when the SPTD install runs it says it has to continue after a reboot. After rebooting, the Daemon Tools install attempts to continue, but fails because SPTD isn't installed. I have also downloaded the latest stable version (1.47) of SPTD and attempted an install, however the same issue crops up (message about a required reboot, then the same after the reboot).

User Digger discovered a workaround for this issue.

Set the "start" registry entry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\sptd to 4.

Reboot.

Delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\sptd registry key and all of its subkeys and entries.

Reboot.

Run the stand-alone install for SPTD again.
