View Full Version : SPTD Doesnt install!

For some reason, SPTD v 1.38 doesn't install. I've also tried previous versions and they haven't installed either. It gives me the message about SPTD must reboot to install. So I reboot, and wait a while, and nothing happens, and then I click the installer again. Guess what appears? SPTD must reboot to install. I'd say I have tried rebooting about 30 times with multiple versions and nothing has worked. I have no clue if I have any kernel debuggers on my computer because my sister gave this computer to me. Any help on this issue would be appreciated.

Wait a second. What do you expect to happen after reboot, when you say you wait a while, and nothing happens? If you run installer again at that point, you should get a message, whether e.g. same version is detected, or no version is detected - what do you see there?

Well, okay, when I first install it, it goes through the EULA and then it says it must reboot to install the SPTD driver. So when I restart my computer, and launch the application, it says the same exact thing- it goes through the EULA and says it must reboot to install the SPTD driver.

Basically, apparently rebooting isnt doing what its supposed to (finish the installation) and it seems to be just going in a big loop. Its supposed to perform operations on reboot but apparently it doesnt, and im not sure why, or how to fix it. So, its not even installing...because it just keeps looping...I cannot possibly install it any way that i know of

Seems something prevents SPTD from being installed correctly.
Check the existance of the following key in registry:
In HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Sptd check if key named r0 exists after reboot. This is volatile key of SPTD layer installation which should disappear after reboot. If it still exists delete r0, then run installer again.

Same problem here, reboot, try to install, reboot, try to install, reboot, etc. I've looked for the registry key and it's not there. The version of sptd with daemon tools 4.08 does the same thing.

I have a g0, s1, and s2, but no r0..also i have the same problem with d-tools 4.x, just as tboswell stated...btw....im not sure if i have a kernel debugger installed which is conflicting with such...or how to detect if i do...this might be a problem? Otherwise , what is it? Why isnt it working?

I´m having the exact same problem here.

After install I´m getting: "No SPTD version was detected" - I reboot/run install again ... still the same condition.

I´ve tried deleting the R0 registry key and restarting/installing again.

Running Vista x64 MSDN RTM. - note: i´ve tried all combinations of startup, including disabling the driver signature enforcement - safe boot - etc.

Hope you´ll have a solution soon :)

Do NOT reboot after removal of r0 key! Just run installer again - what does it say?

Parabolic
12-01-2006, 10:13 PM
If I... install>delete R0>install(no reboot) ..... then I get: No SPTD version was detected.

I doesn´t seem to make any difference how I go about it - the SPTD install is never recognized.

I had SPTD 1.35? working ( the one that came with Deamon Tools 4.06)
...i´ve tried reinstalling the old version, but still no go.....

Do NOT reboot after removal of r0 key!

I dont HAVE the r0 present even before rebooting!! ITs not there. That was the other people who had it. I dont have an r0 key. And i have XP not Vista. What do i do? it just keeps restarting and restarting the installer.

Do you see any error messages regarding SPTD in system event log (execute eventvwr.msc)?

I see none, I checked all types of messages for the sptd category and nothing was found in the entire system log.

Provide your complete system specs, and complete list of installed software then. SPTD installs correctly on healthy systems, something blocks the correct installation on your system.

I'll give you the list of programs in add/remove , but I am not sure what you mean in terms of system specs? Is there a tool I can use to find and generate a log of this? What exactly are you looking for? I'm better with software than hardware and this probably shows in my questions.

List of programs in add/remove *found with HijackThis logfile scanner in Misc. Tools- note that first two __ entries do not have names and thus i have no clue what they might be, they are shown as blank spaces ( the number of _'s is the number of characters maybe? for the name but they exist somehow possibly. >?

Just post info about your system, e.g. if it's made by manufacturer like Dell, what CPU, board, vga, other cards (scsi, tv, nic, etc.), hdd & dvd, the controllers they are connected to, do you use RAID.
But the time I saw CCleaner & SpyBot I think there could be the problem. Registry cleaners are dangerous for the registry, you never know what exactly they do, and SpyBot could block the generation of required registry keys. Please check SpyBot options.

It's a part of Dell Embassy Suite, check if it's installed in control panel -> software add/remove, or Embassy Suite options.

You can also check running a MSINFO, find the Program Files\Dell\Embassy Trust Suite by Wave Systems\ folder...Just remove the startup entries: "EMBASSY Trust Suite Secure Update" and "Document Manager" manually check and delete any older SPTD version re boot.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Also tried removing r0 from registry and retrying etc. Still got the same problem.

If system specs are needed, I'm running:

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional - Service Pack 2 (5.1.2600)
CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 2.53GHz at 2533MHz
GFX: VIA/S3G VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP 64MB

Is there any known solution to this problem ?
Cause I got exactly the same error and it seems a little bit uneccessary if everyone should send an email about that.

In my case I run the installer and is told to reboot computer. After reboot I run the installer again and it says that no SPTD exist on computer and ask if it should be installed. If I choose to install again the same thing happens.
I also really tried to clean register from sptd keys, removed everything with sptd in it but that did not help at all...

I have the same problem as described above.

I use Windows Vista Ultimate, Build 6000 and would like to install Alcohol 120%

I have done (latest):
1. Installed SPTD 1.40 (Beta)
2. REBOOT
3. After reboot the version of SPTD.sys is V1.40
4. Start Install of Alcohol 120%
5. After accepting licence agreement it need to Reboot BEFORE something is done
6. REBOOT
7. After reboot the version of SPTD.sys is 1.38 again !!!!!!
8. Alcohol 120% Setup restarts
9. After accepting licence agreement it need to Reboot BEFORE something is done
10. REBOOT
11. Alcohol 120% Setup restarts
12. After accepting licence agreement it need to Reboot BEFORE something is done
13. REBOOT
14. Alcohol 120% Setup restarts
15. After accepting licence agreement it need to Reboot BEFORE something is done
16. REBOOT
17. Alcohol 120% Setup restarts
18. After accepting licence agreement it need to Reboot BEFORE something is done
19. REBOOT
20. And so on……
It’s a very buggy Setup-Routine of alcohol 120% !!!!
Maybe there is a way to extract your setup.exe and to install alcohol120% manually???
- I have setup my system new once, while your software produced a BLUESCREEN at boot (also in safe mode) :-(
- I have tried to install alcohol 120% in many many many different ways, like described in lot forum entries
- I have deleted my Registry-Keys like described
- And so on

I hope this bug will be fixes very soon.

I had exactly the same problem some months ago. I have now a new Dell laptop, also from work, the same problems. I couldn't be bothered going through it all again, so I have an old (v3) version of Daemon installed.

However, you might want to read through the thread because I did notice that I could get Daemon tools v4 to work using "run as".

well, 1.39 on vista would't even let vista boot , or go into safe mode. Now, with 1.40, it just won't install. fresh install of vista, one care, office 2007, that's about it. Infinite loop as described above.

Same issue here: installation program makes a cycle of reboots, every even run says that it will continue after reboot, every odd run says suggests to disable current service and retry after reboot.

Okay. I've got a WinXP SP2 Russian install with all security updates, vendor hardware drivers. Almost no additional software. The box is a PC, mainboard Asus A7V8X, a SCSI controller Adaptec AHA-2940. One SCSI HDD, two SATA HDDs. The boot disk is a SCSI one, the %systemroot% is on SATA one.

Two reproduce the issue in clean way, I have booted to safe mode and wiped all remains of SPTD installtion from registry. Then booted in normal way and run installtion of Daemon Tools - daemon408-139-x86.exe, that contains SPTD 1.39. I've run it via "Run As...", choosing builtin administrator account.

After acking EULA installation program said, that it will continue after reboot. After reboot I've run daemon408-139-x86.exe again via "Run As...". It displayed a message box:

"Current SPTD installation cannot be validated by setup. It is recommended to disable SPTD service and rerun setup after reboot. Do you want to disable SPTD service now? "OK", "Cancel""

If I press OK, after reboot the mentioned cycle will start again.

And now in the system log I have three identical error messages from sptd service.

ID 4, error in internal driver structures

Hello. I'm facing same problem. I tried to install last version of Alcohol 120% (1.9.6.4719). It also loops (reboot before continiune, again reboot and again). I went to their support forum ( http://forum.alcohol-soft.com/index.php?showtopic=25165 ). They suggested to go here and read more. Also they noticed about "rd0". Ok, then I looked in system registry and found this key "rd0". I deleted it, without reboot run alcohol setup and got same problem. It asked to reboot again. Before reboot I noticed that key "rd0" had appeared again. After reboot it didn't disappeared.

After that i downloaded SPTDinst-v142-x86 and run it. It said that no SPTD version was detected. I pressed Install button - after installation it offered me to reboot. I have rebooted my computer. Run SPTD installation again - and again it said that no drivers blah blah blah. Install, reboot, nothing. Installation of alcohol after all is same. I runing Windows Vista 32 bit Ultimate. Can you help with this problem please? :)

Sorry for my english. :o

I've booted into safe mode, cleansed the registry, then rebooted and installed SPTD v1.42. This helped. No error messages in eventlog. Thanks!

However, if I try to install latest release of DaemonTools, that contains SPTD v1.39 in it, it says "Current SPTD installation cannot be validated by setup" and suggest to disable SPTD service and reinstall it. If I would do this, I'll enter the reboot loop again.

Looks like you (Duplex Secure) have fixed the problem in latest release, but stupid DaemonTools installation program doesn't allow me to skip old SPTD installation. So I should bug DaemonTools support.

P.S. Sorry that replying via forum, not email. Don't have access to my mail from this box.

Oops! I was too fast to tell that everything is OK. After several minutes after boot, I see repeating error messages from sptd in event log. They are all same:

That's strange since it is almost empty installation of Windows XP SP2, including all security updates.

How can I find which software is hooking API calls?

Ok thaks, problem is gone.

I changed start value, rebooted. Deleted from registry "stpd" key and rebooted again. Then I run SPTDinst-v142-x86.exe with administrative priveleges. It installed as usually. After reboot there was no error message in event log. When I run SPTDinst-v142-x86.exe it said, that drivers are already installed. Then I tried to install Alcohol also as administrator. Thank god it installed correctly wtihout asking for reboot. At least.

Thank you for all.

Hi

I'm running Windows 2000 and I've had the same looping install problem. I went through the whole registery and removed all keys that related to SPTD (I saved each one by exporting them first just in case) I then uninstalled my AntiVirus program (AVG) and deleted all files containing SPTD in name.
I rebooted and it installed perfectly after that.

Good luck every one

How did you manage to get it running. Im trying the steps Zoomer described in his last post but it still keeps looping at startup. (i get an unreadable BSOD) Tried booting into safe mode etc. No luck :(

Im running Vista Retail (Final RTM) x64 Ultimate. Nothing else installed, just vista.

In safe mode it gets to loading crcdisk.sys and than it hangs (BSOD) and an reboot follows.

Tried also on 2 different machines: same problem....

System 1:
AMD x64 3200+
1GB RAM
3x 160gb Sata HDD
1x DVD burner
1x DVD reader
6800GT
Vista x64 Ultimate

System 2:
AMD x64 4400x2
1GB RAM
1x 200gb Sata HDD
1x DVD burner
6800GT
Vista x64 Ultimate

If i boot into system restore point there is no error message what-so-ever.

Please some help/advise here....

Do you use latest SPTD layer version 1.42?
If you get BSOD your problem is different from the other users' problems.
Boot with your Windows cd into recovery console, and execute "disable sptd" command, this will disable SPTD service. Send minidump (Windows\Minidump directory - if available) to our support (support@duplexsecure.com) for analysis.
It seems crcdisk.sys BSODs may be caused by problematic SATA drivers though.

Hi all!
Does somebody fix or find the problem of loop reboot message during installation of SPTD 1.42?
Why somebody install SPTD from first try and other can't do it? Where is the problem hides?
My system:
Intel P4 2.8;
Gigabite motherboard 865i chipset;
Samsung 2x256Mb RAM;
LG DVD-RW;
Win XP Pro SP2;
DirectX 9.0c
Tried: Clear registry keys as said above, safe mode, ets.
As far as I can see from messages above reinstall OS does not helps.

I have the very same problem. I'm on a fully updated XP Pro (SP2 etc.) - Athlon 1800+ (not DELL).

I try to install running SPTDinst-v143-x86.exe, it tells me "No SPTD version was detected" and I push "install". It tells me to reboot, and I do so. When I run the .exe again, it just gives me "No SPTD version was detected" again - and over and over and over, no matter how much I reboot. I've followed all the tips concerning registry changes - doesn't seem to make any difference. I've booted into safe mode and tried installing from there, doesn't seem to make any difference. Nor does disabling AVG under a normal bootup. In short, I'm stumped, and a bit surprised to find no working solution to this problem that I can see has persisted for quite some time ...

(No errors in the event log, btw ...)

I've had the exact same problem, possibly due to a botched Alchohol 120% install a while back. Still wanting to try out the program (Because it supports mouting disk images with Vista 64 bit) today I gave it another shot. After the same problem with looping installs, I eventually found and tried both SPTDinst-v143-x64.exe and SPTDinst-v145-x64.exe, with no better results.

Here is what I did that solved the problem:

Autoruns is a great program, I mostly use it to clean infected systems, available here as a free download: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Security/Autoruns.mspx)

After starting the Autoruns, I clicked on the Services tab, scrolled down to "StarWindService", right clicked, and DELETE.

Next, I clicked on the Drivers tab, scrolled down to "sptd", right clicked and DELETE.

Without rebooting, I was then able to successfully install SPTDinst-v145-x64.exe. After rebooting, I was able to install the latest Acohol 120% trial.

Hope this helps someone, and be careful with Autoruns. Great power to heal....or destroy! (your system :) )

I'm happy that all those solutions have worked for others, but unfortunately, hasn't for me...

I'm running XP Pro SP2 updated on a Dell Latitude D620 with a core 2 duo processor and 2GB of RAM.
One thing I noticed is that SATA drives may have problems with SPTD, and as far as I know my HD is SATA, but my CD-Rom/DVD drive isn't.

I tried all the solutions mentioned in this topic, but it still doesn't install correctly...

The one thing that I don't get is why, when I'm not blocking SPTD from running, I can't access the config key through regedit? Isn't this situation that is preventing the SPTD and Daemon Tools from identifying wich version is running and that the driver/service is running correctly?

Thanks for your time.

Eduardo

(I also would like to apologise for my bad english)

Edit: I was installing version 1.50 of SPTD

No, when SPTD is running in prevents all unauthorized access, so this is normal behavior.
Do you have pre-installed software on your system, e.g. Document Manager? This software conflicts with SPTD layer, so please remove it.

i dont know if somebody has already posted this method here but this helped me: start msconfig, then switch on diagnostic startup, then reboot, install SPTD (with all reboots it needs, but it must be still switched on diagnostic startup) after install switch it back on normal startup and reboot... everything should be ok...

bcdedit should be in Windows\System32 directory, so try to open a DOS box, then change dir (cd) to mentioned folder, and try again. Ensure you enter the command correctly, i.e. with "/"!

so for others (vista): go to desktop right klik on your mouse, new , shortcut

Did you update OS (i.e. earlier Win7 build to latest), or did you upgrade OS (i.e. Vista to Win7)?

So you did an upgrade-installation of Win7? Unfortunately upgrade installtion corrupts SPTD configuration, so disable SPTD in registry, open registry editor (execute regedit), go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\sptd
and change "Start" to 4 (= disabled), then reboot. After reboot open registry editor again, enable all permissions of sptd/cfg key, then delete entire sptd key, and reboot again (important!).
After this second reboot re-install SPTD layer, and after required reboot software using SPTD layer.

Argh...I am very sorry but I tried that a hundred times already and it still doesn't work. I even uninstalled all security softwares and turned off kernel debugging and it still didn't work :(

Any ideas? I followed the steps you have mentioned here many many times already. Going to try again but by now, I don't have the slightest bit of hope left.

Ensure you reboot before re-installation.
Also check system eventlog (execute eventvwr.msc) regarding SPTD error messages, post the entire error message including all error bytes (see Details tab).

I upgraded from Vista 64 bit to Win7 64 bit and SPTD stopped working. I followed Digger's directions and it allowed me to install correctly. Thanks!
