When i installed the DEAMON-TOOLS V4.0,it always shows an alertion:
this program will install SCSI Pass Through Direct layer on your computer,
sptd is not compatible with kernel mode debuggers(softice, windbg, etc.)
please cancel setup if you plan to use kernel debugger on this computer."

How can I do to solve this problem?

What is the problem? If you read the note carefully, you should notice that it is an information about incompatibilities of SPTD layer with kernel debuggers only. Normal users don't have kernel debuggers installed, thus you should have no problem with continuing the installation by pressing the "ok" button.
Did you check our FAQ yet?

It seems I have the same problem but it is a little bit different as Digger seems to think.
Some days ago I got problems with Alcohol 120% which could not load its virtual drive any more. As I couldn't get information what the problem could be I uninstalled and then tried to reinstall the program.
At the reinstallation the software wanted to install the SPTD so I clicked OK and my system restarted. After reboot Alcohol setup started automatically but wanted to install the SPTD again and after next reboot again etc.
Next I tried to install SPTD by using the setup from Duplex Secure but the problem stays the same.
Then I tried to uninstall SPTD to start from the scratch with a cleaned up system but the setup from Duplex Secure told me that there was no SPTD layer installed. Even in safe mode the same message occured. While booting into safe mode there is also no message the SPTD layer will load (even I installed it before many times).
So every tip I found in the internet didn't work and I decided to install my complete windows from the scratch. After reinstalling my OS, all updates, all hardware drivers and my anti virus software I installed the SPTD layer using the file from Duplex Secure and rebooted. After reboot I started the Alcohol setup routine but even now it wanted to install SPTD again.

It seems the installation of SPTD doesn't complete correctly. The sptd.sys is copied into drivers directory and the registry entries are made but obviously the layer isn't initialized at windows startup.

In the fact that the software incl. the layer worked until some days ago, is it possible that one of the last microsoft updates is responsible for the problem?

@sls3366 and aussiestyle: Could it be that this is your problem too?

If you run Windows x64 Edition there is an issue caused by the new so-called kernel patch protection surprisingly introduced by Microsoft.
The Windows update causing this is KB914784 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914784).
This problem is currently under investigation, as a workaround please remove the update in add/remove software.

Hi Digger,
as you said after uninstalling the update everything works fine again.
So I will have an eye on Duplex Secure website waiting a new version of SPTD getting released.
Thank you for your help :-)

Hi there,
I am also having these problems.

XP Home v2002 SP3

I started having these problems after a Microsoft autoupdate! I have gone through the various hoops that everyone else seems to have, with the same negative results. I am trying to get Alcohol 120% to work again.

The last thing I tried, was to search the registry and manually delete ALL references to SPTD. I was able to remove all of the keys. One of them, required me as Adminstrator, to add the Administrators Group to its list with Full Access, before I could delete the key. Prior to this, the SPTD install seemed to work. Now it doesn't. "SPTDinst-v156-x86.exe" installer fails with: "Failed to open service key."

I would like a new version of the installer, that bootstraps itself, providing all its registery keys. Alternatively, provide a 'reg' file with the required entries, assuming all SPTD reg keys in my system, are either corrupted or deleted! This should be a simple enough job for the people who wrote the driver.

In addition, I would like to suggest that Duplex Secure talk to Microsft about their recent (mid to late December) updates and get it sorted out.

Thank you,
Brad.

Please check system eventlog regarding SPTD error messages, post the entire error message including all error bytes.
Failed to open service key means access to Services hive in registry is blocked, either due to screwed permissions or some "smart" software.

There are no System Log entries for SPDT.

Already checked permissions for Services key (Local_Machine\System\CurrentControlSet\Services) if Administrators and System has full permissions?
Same for SPTD, and if not, give those keys these full permissions.

ImagePath should be also REG_EXPAND_SZ instead of Hex and also it should normally point to System32\Drivers\sptd.sys

bwillcott

The ImagePath is as you have stated. RegEdit exports it as shown.

Have you tried contacting Microsoft about their updates?

I am loosing faith in both you and the Developers of Alcohol 120%!

If I don't get a fix soon, I will be uninstalling both products and using an alternative. This would be a shame, as I have been very pleased with Alcohol 120% for the last 4 years or more.

Thank you.

If you screw the registry permissions up don't blame us. There is no known issue with SP3 or any update yet. If there would be, there should be more reports like yours, don't you think? And we checked SP3 and all MS updates on our systems of course.

Can you email me a 'reg' file containing all the keys that your driver requires?
