Hello,

I'm having trouble installing SPTD version 1.58 on a 32-bit edition of Windows XP SP3. When I launch the SPTD installer (SPTDinst-v158-x86.exe), the text above the command buttons is:

"No SPTD version was detected.
Select action to be performed."

After clicking install, it creates the following keys under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services (and under the applicable ControlSetXXX branches):

[sptd]
+-- [Cfg]
| | g0 := 38 23 e8 d0 bf f2 2d 6f e5 62 3f ac 56 9b 0d 5e 11 d1 74 0c c2 ae 3a a3 fe a9 58 d9 47 81 fb e8

| ErrorControl := 0x00000001
| Group := "Boot Bus Extender"
| ImagePath := "System32\Drivers\sptd.sys"
| Start := 0x00000000
| Tag := 0x00000007
| Type := 0x00000001

It creates the following key under HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Sy stem and applicable ControlSetXXX branches:

[sptd]
| EventMessageFile := "%SystemRoot%\System32\IoLogMsg.dll"
| TypesSupported := 0x00000007

It also adds "sptd" to the Sources multi-string value in HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\Sy stem. In addition to the registry changes, it extracts the 704KB file "sptd.sys" to C:\windows\system32\drivers. The installer then tells me that I need to reboot for changes to take effect.

After a restart, the r0 key(s) are gone. I have no secondary "sptdXXXX.sys" file in C:\windows\system32\drivers, and no LEGACY_SPTD key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\R oot. If I run the installer again, I'm greeted with:

"No SPTD version was detected.
Select action to be performed."

My System event log from a boot after installation shows the following:

Type Date Time Source Category Event User Computer

My Application event log from a boot after installation shows the following:

My Security event log is empty.

Typing:

sc.exe start sptd

at a command prompt gives me:

"[SC] StartService FAILED 2001:

The specified driver is invalid."

I'm assuming that this is because sptd.sys is a boot driver, but I thought I'd include it just in case it's relevant.

I turned on boot logging, but it didn't provide any useful information. "sptd.sys" wasn't mentioned in my boot log.

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Once are empty.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run contains:

LCDSmartie := "C:\Program Files\LCDSmartie\LCDSmartie.exe -totalhide"

LCDSmartie is a program that allows me to use the VFD on the front of my case.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Once and HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run OnceEx are empty.

My startup folder contains a shortcut to C:\Program Files\Console\Console.exe, a copy of Console2 (sf.net/projects/console).

SPTD does not appear under device manager when "Show hidden devices" is checked.

I have no known spyware infections on my computer.

Is there anything I've listed above that may be causing my SPTD installation to silently fail? Is there any way for me to find out more about what's happening with "sptd.sys" at boot? I tried manually adding a legacy SPTD service, but to no avail. Is there a patch or script available that I could use to manually install the SPTD service correctly? I'm sure that if I reinstalled Windows XP, I'd be able to install SPTD without a problem. I'm more interested in finding out what's preventing it from being installed than losing my current (highly customised) Windows XP installation.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm able to provide more information about my configuration if necessary.
