Umm I have been looking online for advice and one forum suggests deleting the sptd.sys driver is that a good idea?

No, if you've problems disable SPTD in registy (open regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\sptd and change Start value to 4, then reboot). This disables SPTD service, so it won't load during boot.
But any software using SPTD layer won't work of course.

Is there any type of file or software that I can provide you with to let you know what's going on on my computer.
